MADAGASCAR
Madagascar is Malagassi’s main country of production and where we have been working longest as producers. Its ideal climate and stunning biodiversity allow us to grow and distill over 20 aromatic plants in Madagascar. As stewards of the land and the precious bounty it offers, we are committed to conserving Madagascar’s natural beauty and plant more than 50,000 trees of various species on the island each year.
An illustration of one of those trees – Ylang Ylang – is depicted in Malagassi’s icon as a nod to the island’s rich abundance and the cycles of nature that sustain us.
MANAKARA
Most of our products are grown around the city of Mankara. In a 50km radius surrounding the city we grow Ravintsara, Black Pepper, Niaouli, Cinnamon, Clove, Vanilla, Tamanu, Palmarosa, Lemon Eucalyptus and more. We are very close to the community in this area of Madagascar and it is in our mission to foster their livelihoods and wellbeing so that they might share in our success. It is where we built our first school – Ecole Malagassi 1.
The high concentration of fields around Mankara allows us to optimize production in a number of ways:
- We employ the same pool of workers to harvest different botanicals in different fields throughout the year, limiting the need for transportation and using shared equipment.
- We adhere to a circular economy, as the waste of one harvest becomes biofuel for the next one.
- We prioritize agroecology, growing multiple essences in the same soil, which keeps it fertile and rich, sustains a healthy ecosystem and produces essential oils of exceptional quality.
NOSY BE
Nosy Be, an island off of Madagascar’s coast. is our second largest production area in Madagascar, where we grow Ylang Ylang and more recently Vetiver. Although we only produce 2 essential oils in the area, it provides our largest production volume spread across
5 distilleries.
For the local communities in Nosy Be we have built water dams to retain water during the rain season and sanitary facilities around villages. We are also currently building a new school on the island – Ecole Malagassi 2.
