Here's what we'd actually tell a new buyer to check—and what we look at ourselves when evaluating essential oils.

1. Full Botanical Name

"Tea tree oil" isn't enough.

A supplier should identify the botanical using its complete Latin name—in this case, Melaleuca alternifolia.

This becomes especially important when different species within the same genus produce oils with significantly different chemical and aromatic profiles.

For professional sourcing, common names are useful for conversation. Botanical names are what establish identity.

2. Documented Country of Origin

Essential oils are agricultural products. Where a plant grows matters.

Climate, soil, altitude, rainfall, cultivar, harvesting practices, and local production methods can all influence the resulting essential oil.

At Malagassi, we don't simply want to know that an oil was "sourced globally." We want to know where it was grown, who produced it, and how it was processed.

Our tea tree oil, for example, comes from a specific producer in South Africa. Our relationships with producers in Madagascar, Morocco, Europe, and other origins give us visibility into production that can't be replaced by a country name printed on a drum.

Traceability should lead somewhere real.

3. Batch-Specific Documentation

"We lab test our oils" sounds reassuring, but professional buyers should ask a second question:

Can I see the documentation for the batch I'm actually buying?

A generic GC-MS report or Certificate of Analysis from a previous production lot tells you very little about the material currently being offered.

Look for documentation connected to an identifiable lot or batch number.

Depending on the oil and application, this may include:

  • Certificate of Analysis (COA)
  • GC or GC-MS analysis
  • Safety Data Sheet (SDS)
  • Physical specifications
  • Allergen or regulatory documentation
  • Organic certification where applicable
  • Pesticide or contaminant testing where applicable

The documentation should ultimately be traceable back to the material you're purchasing.

4. Extraction Method

How was the aromatic material actually extracted?

Most essential oils are produced through steam distillation or hydrodistillation, while citrus oils are commonly expressed or cold pressed.

Other aromatic materials may be produced through solvent or supercritical CO₂ extraction, although these are more accurately described as extracts rather than conventional essential oils.

The extraction method matters because it influences yield, composition, aroma, and ultimately price.

A knowledgeable supplier should be able to tell you how the material was produced.

5. Chemical Profile

GC and GC-MS analysis are among the most valuable tools available for essential oil authentication.

They allow laboratories to separate and identify many of the volatile compounds present in an oil and compare the resulting profile with what would normally be expected from that botanical.

Unexpected compounds, unusual concentrations, or missing chemical markers can raise questions about identity, contamination, adulteration, or production.

But a GC-MS report should never be interpreted in isolation.

6. Physical Constants

Physical testing provides another important layer of verification.

Depending on the oil, specifications may include:

  • Specific gravity / relative density
  • Refractive index
  • Optical rotation
  • Flash point, where relevant
  • Appearance and color

Authentic essential oils generally fall within expected ranges for these characteristics.

A value outside specification doesn't automatically prove adulteration—natural materials vary, and analytical methods and conditions matter—but it does provide a reason to investigate further.

For manufacturers receiving bulk quantities, these measurements can be particularly useful during incoming quality control.

7. Organoleptic Evaluation

Never underestimate the nose.

Laboratory instruments can tell us an extraordinary amount about an essential oil, but they don't experience aroma the way a perfumer, distiller, formulator, or experienced essential oil buyer does.

We evaluate aroma, color, clarity, character, and overall appearance alongside analytical results.

After years of smelling the same botanical from successive harvests, you develop a memory for it.

Sometimes you'll smell something unusual before you ever see it on a laboratory report.

Neither approach replaces the other.

The laboratory tells us what molecules are present. Experience helps tell us whether the oil is actually beautiful.

8. Realistic Pricing

Price alone doesn't determine quality.

The most expensive essential oil isn't automatically the best, and a competitively priced oil isn't automatically suspicious.

But the economics of the plant still have to make sense.

Rose requires an enormous quantity of flowers to produce a relatively small amount of essential oil. Blue tansy has limited production and demanding harvesting requirements. Sandalwood requires years of tree growth before harvest.

If a supplier is offering one of these oils at a fraction of the normal market price, ask why.

There may be a legitimate explanation—but there needs to be an explanation.

As we often tell customers at Malagassi, there are a million decisions involved in producing an essential oil. Those decisions can move a producer toward higher yield and lower cost, or toward lower yield and better quality.

Understanding those decisions is often more valuable than comparing two prices on a spreadsheet.

Why GC-MS Alone Isn't Enough

GC-MS is one of the most powerful tools in essential oil quality control, but there's a misconception that a clean-looking chromatogram automatically proves an oil is authentic and high quality.

It doesn't.

GC-MS primarily tells you about chemical composition. It doesn't tell you whether the botanical was harvested at the ideal moment, whether the distiller made the right cuts, whether the aroma is exceptional, or whether the producer sacrificed quality to maximize yield.

Sophisticated adulteration can also be difficult to identify through a simplistic reading of a chromatogram.

This is why quality control works best as a system.

We combine analytical results with physical constants, origin information, production knowledge, organoleptic evaluation, historical batch data, and—perhaps most importantly—relationships with the people actually producing the oil.

Knowing who made your essential oil and how they made it remains one of the strongest forms of quality control.

Certifications: Important, but Understand What They Mean

Certifications such as USDA Organic, EcoCert certification, and Kosher documentation can be extremely valuable, but they shouldn't be confused with purity tests.

Organic certification establishes that applicable production and handling requirements have been followed. Kosher certification addresses compliance with applicable kosher requirements.

Neither certification tells you whether an essential oil has a beautiful aroma or is the best possible example of that botanical.

Think of certifications as another part of the documentation and traceability system—not a replacement for analytical and sensory quality control.

Red Flags in Bulk and Wholesale Essential Oils

Buying wholesale essential oils means you're trusting a supplier with much larger quantities, which makes proper due diligence even more important.

One important distinction: consistency does not mean identical.

Essential oils are agricultural products, and no two harvests are chemically identical. Rainfall, temperature, soil conditions, harvest timing, and dozens of other variables naturally influence the plant.

A trustworthy supplier shouldn't try to eliminate every trace of natural variation. Instead, they should establish meaningful specifications, compare new production against previous lots, and understand why variations occur.

That's the difference between natural batch variation and unexplained inconsistency.

Final Thoughts

A real essential oil purity checklist comes down to evidence, not marketing language.

Start with the botanical name and origin. Understand how the oil was produced. Review batch-specific analytical and physical data. Smell the oil. Compare it with previous lots. And whenever possible, understand who actually produced it.

No single document proves quality—not even a GC-MS report.
